Project Overview

Culture Lab Detroit is a nonprofit that works with local communities through creative partnerships, projects, and public dialogues. Each year, founder Jane Schulak picks a theme for its free, public fall events. We've been the brand design team since 2016, and we designed the visuals for Walls (2016) and Post-Truth (2017) before this project.

In October 2018, Culture Lab hosted two days of events in Detroit on the theme of "the crisis of beauty."

Project Brief

  • Communicate "the crisis of beauty" visually

  • Raise awareness and draw local, national, and international attendance to the 2018 Beauty events

  • Subvert the stereotypes, trends, and exclusiveness around "beauty" in culture

  • Stay accessible to the public and to art insiders alike

  • Relate visually to Walls and Post-Truth while giving Beauty an identity of its own

Project Outcome

  • 1,030 people took part in Culture Lab's 2018 programs.

  • Six national journalists came to Detroit, from Artspace, Cool Hunting, Bust, Cultured, Culture Type, and Art Agenda.

  • The events produced 12 national and 8 local stories, with more than 105 million impressions.

  • Culture Lab's social channels reached about 136,000 people a month.
